Proteas skipper Graeme Smith got his hands on the ICC's Test Championship Mace at the Wanderers on Tuesday.
The mace is held by the number ranked team in the world, which has been the Australians for many, many years.
It was returned to the ICC earlier this month after the Proteas won a test series in Australia and is now in South Africa for the return series.
The Proteas are favourites to win the series and become the number one test team in the world.
The first test at the Wanderers starts on Thursday.
