More on the Uniform Changes...

Like I said, I care more about how the team changes on the field -- not so much the wardrobe they wear -- however, some more tidbits came out on the team's new threads courtesy of the Baltimore Sun.
The Orioles' logo and the bird on the team's caps have undergone alterations. There are also changes in each of the team's three jerseys, some more subtle than others. But surely, no change will attract as much attention -- and be met with as much applause -- as the addition of "Baltimore" to the team's road jerseys for the fir! st time in 36 years.

"Anytime we have a situation where our fans are requesting something of the club, we, of course, listen and try to accommodate whenever possible," said Greg Bader, Orioles director of communications. "One of the things that we said is if and when we do engage in some sort of uniform change, it would not be strictly a reactionary move to do something that didn't help our brand and, in turn, help the organization and our fans in that regard."
It's wonderful that the team has been in tandem with the wishes of the fans for a change in the uniform, but I think it also -- more or less -- improves the bottom line and get us all, especially those who stuck through the team through thick or thin to get us at least excited about something.
"Peter Angelos gave us some very clear direction as to what he wanted to see," Bader said. "He wanted to make sure that we honored the past, paid homage to the great history that we have ! and that we directly showed our connection to our city, our st! ate, our region and to the fans. We need to have a vision, to look to the future. While we make take elements of past looks and uniforms and identity, we should create our own identity based on the path that we are traveling."
At this point, considering how far the team has fallen for many off the sports landscape regionally, it's a nice gesture to at least restore some connection with the team and the community.

If this had been done sooner, perhaps more fans would be willing to spend money -- um, in the park.

And here at the changes...
Home jersey: The Orioles' script across the home whites will stay the same, though two elements have changed. There will be an orange and black stripe around both sleeves and down the pants, replacing a thin, black line in both areas. There will also be a circular patch on the left sleeve, featuring a Maryland flag and the text, "Baltimore Orioles."

Road jersey: "Baltimore" will be across the front of the gray jerseys in orange and outlined in black and in lettering very similar to how "Orioles" is scripted on the home jerseys. The Maryland flag patch on the left sleeve will be surrounded by the text "Orioles baseball." On the right sleeve, the "Orioles" script, which stretches across the home jerseys, will be written in smaller form. The uniform pants will also include orange striping.

Alternate jersey:
The black jerseys the Orioles have worn on most home Fridays since 2005 will have "Baltimore" scripted on the right sleeve and be adorned by the Orioles baseball and Maryland patch on the left one. Bader said that allows the club to wear the alternate jerseys in Friday games on the road, as well as at home. The black cap with an orange brim and "O's" on the front will remain.

Cap/logo:! The Orioles will not have a different cap for home and! away ga mes next year. Their 2009 cap, which is orange-billed, will feature a slightly different look because of changes made to the team's bird logo. The bird looks more like a traditional oriole with its head tilted upward and it feathers more outstretched and a more pronounced head, chest and neck area. The bird's feet are also more perched rather than flat. The logo will be outlined in gray, eliminating yellow from the team's color schemes. The team's batting helmets will also feature an orange bill rather than being all black like previous season models. The "swinging bird" logo will be on the left sleeve of the player's jackets and warm-up tops.
I don't have a problem at all with the old uniforms -- I prefer a simple and clean look -- I'm not a fan of busy elements at all; thus, it looks like the new threads will be livened up from what we have seen recently.

However, I just hope it's not too busy trying to embrace the state and region.

Someti! mes less is more when it comes to jerseys.

Gammons' Article on Youth & The Economy

With the uncertainty in the economy, and with teams watching the bottom line closely (excluding the Yankees), one has to wonder how business will be conducted from here on out both on the field and in the stands.

Love or hate him -- ESPN's Peter Gammons has a great piece on his blog about the future of baseball, player development, the new economy and young players. With most teams focusing these days more on development, drafting, and building a team through trades, most organizations are steering away from signing old, costly, has-been veterans.

In fact, ! it looks like the Jay Payton's of the world will have a hard time finding work unless they are willing to sign a minor league deal or a minimum MLB deal.

It seems that the young player is now being given a lot of attention opposed to signing high-priced free agents, except in a few instances. The new reality of building a team, not only comes from the success of the Rays, Twins and Marlins, but perhaps because of the sinking American economy.

Team may be moving in this direction, perhaps not because of necessity, but the fact being that most teams expect a decline in ticket sales, advertising dollars, sponsorships, and the all important luxury/sky box lease.
From ESPN: So in 2009, we focus not on the names and the celebrity value of additions to clubs, but what Jay Bruce, Ian Stewart, Dexter Fowler, David Price, Cameron Maybin, Max Scherzer, Chris Davis, Matt Wieters, Gordon Beckham, Adam Lind, J! ustin Upton, Tommy Hanson and other extraordinary young player! s will d o for their teams. Ask the Phillies and Mets about Florida's Josh Johnson (24) and Ricky Nolasco (26). The Marlins had nearly the best 1-2 punch in the NL East down the stretch in 2008, so where does that take them this season?

This season is also the first since the most recent major recession struck the world. Sure, the Yankees could afford $423 million for three players, with a market where two teams each drew four million fans, a management that had tons of money coming off the books and substantial government aid in the building of their Taj Mahal stadium. But January has arrived and there are dozens of good players whispering collusion, and while clubs likely do have an information bank, the economic reality is that the roaring inflationary days of summer may be tempered. From Bernie Madoff to Arizona land prices, several owners have been affected, and in cities like Cleveland, Detroit, St. Louis, Houston and Miami (where the average cost of a home is down 3! 0 percent), entertainment dollars are going to be harder to excuse for a while.
Peter hits the nail on the head with his analysis -- attending sports in a luxury, and the first thing anyone does when they are in financial trouble is to cut back on ancillary or luxury items.

With the cost of big-screen TV's coming down, HTDV, and with the clarity they offer, most fans are willing to stay home and defray the cost of attending a game.

Baseball teams realize it and they are operating their business differently. It looks like the reality of the new economy are being felt on the field, and expect it to be felt at the ballpark. I would not be surprised to see teams do all they can to bring fans into the fold, whether it be in the form of discount nights, two-for-one specials, or in case what the Orioles did with MASN -- $1 nights.

George Sherrill & Orioles Agree To A Deal Avoiding Arbitration

As predicted, George Sherrill will not go to arbitation as the closer and the Orioles have come to an agreement for his 2009 contract...

From the Baltimore Sun: The Orioles avoided arbitration with George Sherrill tonight, signing the All-Star reliever to a $2.75 million deal for the 2009 season.

Eligible for arbitration for the first time, Sherrill, who saved 31 games last season, tripled his salary from 2008. Sherrill had asked for $3.4 mllion, while the Orioles offered $2.2 million. ! The hearing had been scheduled for Feb. 19.

The signing means the Orioles won't have any arbitration hearings again this season. They haven't gone to arbitration since beating Rodrigo Lopez before the 2006 season. Overall, the Orioles have gone to arbitration nine times since 1994 and are 8-1 in those cases. The club is 6-0 when its arbitration efforts have been led by general counsel H. Russell Smouse.

Sherrill, 31, finished seventh in the American League last year in saves, and set career highs with 53 1/3 innings pitched and 58 strikeouts. His season highlight came in his first All-Star Game, when he pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings to help the American League secure a 15-inning victory at Yankee Stadium.!

Seeing the World Baseball Classic Game Two; The US Was Whipped, Tarred, and Made to Look Silly...

I was there live and in living color; the collection of players on the United States team in the World Baseball Classic was just pathetic.

Really.

I'm sure you're read and saw what happened to the United States on Saturday versus Puerto Rico. I don't know how to articulate what I witnessed, but this is a squad that had no business being a victim to a mercy rule. They played this like this was some run-of-the-mill Spring Training exhibition game – not a competition, and they got their arses wiped by a team ready to play.

They looked lethargic, and really didn't seem to give as much as an effort than their Puerto Rican counterparts with an offense to dismantle their opponents and as well an incredible performance by Javier Vasquez who in his career has been seen as nothing less than *soft*.

A Witness to History: Randy Johnson Wins His 300th Game

Randy Johnson became the sixth left-hander and 24th overall pitcher to win 300 games in his career, as the San Francisco Giants beat the Washington Nationals 5-2. before a small, rain-soaked crowd that could not have numbered much more than a few thousand. The small crowd for such a historic day was shocking to see, but I guess considering the state of the Washington organization, the weather, and the time of day game was being held, I guess it hampered those who could have come out otherwise.

The historic day for Johnson was pushed back as violent storms passed through the Capital region on Wednesday, prompting a three hour, forty-two minute rain delay and eventually leading to the postponement of the game until the following afternoon.

Thursday's crowd – announced at 16,787, but more than likely numbering in a few thousand – saw Johnson (5-4) go six strong innings, allowing just one unearned run on two hits and two walks. He struck out just two on the day,! but relied on his defense to make several good plays behind him.

Johnson – who at 45 years old, 6-feet-11, and with a history of back issues – also made the highlight reel with a good defensive gem of his own. He knocked a comebacker down and scrambled to retrieve the ball, which had rolled toward second. The Big Unit reached down and flipped the ball to first – sprawling on the turf after the toss – to get Anderson Hernandez by half a step.

Johnson's win was preserved by closer Brian Wilson. With two outs, the bases loaded and Washington down 2-1, Wilson had a 3-2 count on Adam Dunn, and he got a called third strike on a fastball that seemed to be a bit low that not only ended a rally, but the frame.

Onto Thirteen Losses in a Row, Brooks Robinson & Consternation

Last night, rookie pitcher David Hernandez got shelled and the Baltimore Orioles lost their 13th game in a row, 5-3, despite a late rally. Baltimore fell behind a never rebounded as Hernandez lasted only 4 1/3 innings, and looked like well, a rookie pitcher. Willy Aybar had an RBI-single in the second inning, Ben Zobrist hit a three run homer in the third, and Carl Crawford hit a solo shot in the fifth to add to Baltimore's misery.

Hernandez's teammates could not get it started early, and suffered because of it. Ty Wigginton had a 2-run homer in the eighth inning, and Chad Moeller plated in a run with a sacrifice fly before the blast; however, it was too little, too late.

Let's forget the season and look at why the Orioles, frankly, have sucked for the better part of a decade and more.

MASN's Roch Kubatko on his blog has an excellent interview with Oriole legend and Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson about various topics - his life, health, and baseball; h! owever, I want to focus on his comments about 2009 versus the infamous 1988 season.

What he had to say was straight-forward, honest, and perhaps sobering.

"I think the big problem with the Orioles is they've never had any continuity in the last 12 or 13 years. You can't just keep hiring managers and general managers. It just doesn't work that way. And every guy who comes in has got a little bit different philosophy on how he should operate. But if I was a betting man, I'd bet that Dave comes back. I'm probably in the minority, too. He's got an impossible task right now. There's nothing he can do. They trade (George) Sherrill, they trade (Aubrey) Huff, guys getting hurt in the outfield. They've got some pretty good players. They've got about five spots out there that are going to be there for a long time.

"The pitchers are going to have a psychological problem. It's par! tly up here (points to head) pitching in this ballpark. You've! got to make good pitches or balls fly out of this ballpark. I saw one game where (Pat) Burrell hit a line drive to right field and the runner was going to go back to third. He got about halfway there and he looked and the ball was in the stands. He just kind of shook his head.

"You've got to score some runs in this ballpark. They need a big bopper there at first base. That's common knowledge. You've got to have someone to back up (Nick) Markakis. It might be tough to get guys to come here. Why would you go to a team that's lost 100 games this year, almost? And pitchers are like, 'Well, I'm not going to pitch in that ballpark.' You almost have to overpay them to come here. They've got a reputation now. They're losers, and they've got to turn that around. Fans have been saying that for a few years. But I follow the team, I pull for them.

"I get asked all the time, wherever I go, 'What's wrong with the Orioles.' I always say they've got some good young players and I hope! they materialize and get better. They have to."

There's not much more to add what Brooks had to say. Yes, rebuilding a team is hard, and you're going to have ups and down with an organization; however, after all the losing and everything, fans have really lost interest -- they may care and follow what's going on -- but overall, no one is going to support a losing product.

Gainey: Kovalev Won't Be Re-Signed by Montreal

Glen Sather, don't even think about lifting that phone!

According to TSN:

General manager Bob Gainey told Montreal radio station CJAD that the team made an offer to Kovalev last week, but the Russian winger took to long to consider the deal, forcing the Canadiens to go in another direction.

The Habs added Scott Gomez from the New York Rangers on the eve of the opening of free agency. The team then signing Mike Cammalleri, Brian Gionta, Jaroslav Spacek and Hal Gill the next day.

He's a good player at times and when he was a New York Ranger he was one of my favorites, but he is way too much like Nik Zherdev. He'll show up when he wants to and New York needs someone who is going to show up to play every single night.

Where's Kovalev going now?

Observations From First Rangers Preseason Game

Rangers 1 - Boston 2

1) Some of the Rangers prospects really impressed me. Yeah, so it was only a preseason game but Matt Gilroy, Evgeny Grachev and Michael Del Zotto all looked like their future's look as promising as Rangers fans have been reading about recently.

There are big question marks about who the Rangers final two or three defensemen on the roster are going to be with Staal, Redden, Girardi and Rozsival all guaranteed to be in the opening night lineup. Honestly, I assumed that Matt Gilroy was going to pretty much have a spot because of all of the good things that I've read about him. Last night he was even better than I expected and looks like a lock to be in the lineup on opening night if he continues to play like he did against the Bruins.

Michael Del Zotto surprised me with how well he played. I was under the i! mpression that Del Zotto was still a major work in progress and would more than likely be heading back to the OHL for another season. Well, Del Zotto stood out against the Bruins (probably the best NYR on the ice). He was jumping into the play, standing up in the neutral zone, using his body and even manning the point on the power play. If this kid continues to play like that there's no way he's going back to Juniors this season.

Evgeny Grachev was also very impressive, playing on a line with Enver Lisin and Artem Anisimov. Despite being only 19 years old, Grachev is one big kid who was able to use his size effectively to hold off defenders and then make plays with the puck along the boards. There aren't many forward positions on this team up for grabs, but if Grachev continues to play like the way he did in his first preseason game the Rangers might have to make room.

2) It's only one game so I'm not going to jump to conclusions but Artem Anisimov ne! eds to be much better if he plans on playing center for the Ra! ngers th is season instead of Hartford. Most Rangers fans consider Anisimov a lock to make the team this season, but last night against the Bruins, both Grachev and Lisin were more impressive.

3) Brian Boyle who is going to have a crack at centering the fourth line started off shaky in the first period taking two minor penalties. But, later in the game he got a couple of scoring chances and was using his size (he's huge!) on the end boards. I thought that Matt Maccarone (sporting a George Parros mustache) had a pretty solid game. I mean, considering I never even heard of him before Andrew Gross of Ranger Rants mentioned that he was skating well during a scrimmage on Monday. In fact, Maccarone isn't even listed on the roster on the Rangers website. But, more than likely he'll be heading to Hartford or less likely in my opinion Charlotte of the ECHL.

4) As of now - in my opinion, Dane Byers and ! P.A. Parenteau will be back in Hartford.

Fight night.

Liga Spanyol 2009/2010 | Ronaldo Bicara Tentang Cederanya

Ronaldo

Ronaldo mengalami cedera ketika melakoni laga kualifikasi Piala Dunia melawan Hongaria akhir pekan lalu.

"Melawan Portugal saya merasa sangat baik, namun tak 100 persen.

Akibat cedera, Ronaldo bakal absen sebulan.

We may sign Andres D'Alessandro from Wolfsburg

D'Alessandro is thought to be unhappy at Wolfsburg and is looking to leave the German outfit.

Tottenham are understood to be leading the chase for the playmaker's signature with D'Alessandro's agent Marcelo Simonian revealing he has held talks with the White Hart Lane outfit.

"I have talked with Frank Arnesen and Spurs are interested in the player but there are a lot of things still to sort out," said Simonian.

"The Germans are not making things easy. They want the same money they paid River Plate for him two years ago."

D'Alessandro is attracted by the opportunity to play in England and feels he would have no problems adapting to The Premiership.

"The Premiership is hard but that doesn't frighten me. I am someone who likes challenges," said D'Alessandro.

"A S! outh American player can triumph in England and Spurs have a good history of this with Osvaldo Ardiles.

"Things haven't gone so well for Juan Veron, Hernan Crespo and Diego Forlan, but that doesn't mean I won't be a success."

He is a great player imo (in my opinion). A player that would be of benefit when it comes to the flair side of our game. He would add a new dimension and craft not seen at the Lane since the days of Ginola.

I hope there are truths to these rumours.

Spurs Does Dellas

By PoshSpur
For THBN

Reports from SkySports (normally credible) are stating that we may be in for Greek international centre-back Traianos Dellas.

Dellas was released by Roma at the end of last season and could possibly be on his way to a host of Premiership clubs.

He would be a good signing. If he wouldn't mind being second choice behind Dawson, then I feel he would offer immense experience at the back.

He was linked at the end of the 2003/2004 season with us also. But we went with Naybet.

Do you think we need another centre-back, even if he's experienced?

With Naybet really getting on now, I believe an older head at the back would help out.

Even though we started off looking like the better side, this Boro team have looked resolute and have got back into the game; scoring a goal that was disallowed. The goal scored by Boro seemed okay, but the ref gave a free-kick against Boro.

We seem to be lacking width. Even though Bentley & Lennon are playing, they both seem to be centering their play and not playing on the wings.

Our shape has looked empty. Juande needs to make changes or we could lose this game.

Condolences

Our condolences go out to the Palacios family.

Harry Redknapp confirmed that Wilson flew out from the UK this morning to be with his family after the remains of his brother, Edwin, were found.

Milan Segera Perbaharui Kontrak Gattuso

MILAN - Menurut Milannews.it, Gennaro Gattuso (foto) segera menerima perpanjangan kontrak dari AC Milan.

Carletto Main Sabar Untuk Pirlo-Pato

Kalah, Leonardo Tetap Puas

Clarence Seedorf menyamakan kedudukan setelah memaksimalkan umpan Ronaldinho. Yuri Zhirkov menutup laga setelah tendangan first time miliknya gagal dibendung kiper Zeljko Kalac.

Chelsea Beralih Ke Pato

MILAN - Menurut News of the World, Chelsea siap menawar Alexandre Pato sebesar €52,5 juta.

Pirlo: Trik Mourinho Tidak Bekerja Lagi

"Kami bermain cantik dibandingkan Inter.

Inzaghi Tak Masalah Jadi Cadangan!

"Saya selalu mencoba bersikap positif.

Sakit, Leonardo Tak Bisa Berkata-Kata Usai Diimbangi Atalanta

Patience a virtue for Ngog

Ngog made a rare start in Tuesday's Carling Cup clash at Leeds and he enhanced his first-team prospects with the only goal of the game.

It was only the 20-year-old's sixth start for the club, but the Frenchman hopes he has given Rafa Benitez much to ponder with his display at Elland Road.

"It was a very important goal for me for my confidence and because we won the game," said Ngog. "I think I played okay. The intensity of the game made it difficult and I was very happy to score.

"Of course I know that I'm not going to play every game so when the coach gives me a chance, I want to do my best for the team and try to score.

"I know I have to be patient and all I can do is when I get a chance, try and take it and show the manager what I can do.

"I hope I have done that in this match and shown the manager my qualities and that I can be another possibility in attack.

"When you are a striker, scoring is always th! e best thing. That is our job and what we work for."

Sevilla Patut Diperhitungkan

Svezia (4-4-2): 1 Isaksson; 5 Stoor, 3 Mellberg, 4 Hansson, 2 Nilsson; 18 S. Larsson, 19 Andersson, 8 A. Svensson, 9 Ljungberg; 10 Ibrahimovic, 17 H. Larsson. All.: Lagerbaek

Spagna (4-4-2): 1 Casillas; 15 Sergio Ramos, 5 Puyol, 4 Marchena, 11 Capdevila; 6 Iniesta, 19 Senna, 8 Xavi, 21 Silva; 9 Torres, 7 Villa. All.: Aragones.

"NESSUN CASO TREZEGUET"

Non so.

In attacco Bellucci e Cassano.

(Roma – Napoli, tifosi napoletani danneggiano treno e creano caos in stazione Termini – SENTENZA: SQUALIFICA FINO AL 31 OTTOBRE DELLE DUE CURVE DEL SAN PAOLO e AMMENDA ALLA SOCIETA')

Juve: caccia a felipe melo

Donati: "we have shown personality"

He celebrated his return in the Italian Championship with a valuable point won from the his Bari in that of Palermo. Maximum Donati is party holder in Sicily betraying expectations. His first ga! me with the Bari midfielder commented so the balance of the third day of Championship: "there is sadness for the goal suffered in the minutes of recovery but we are pleased to be able to to balance on a difficult field such as that of Palermo." We have demonstrated personality, it is an important point that sum to that achieved against Inter Milan and against the Bologna at home. We're doing good and we must continue to do so. Perhaps you could better manage the advantage, make the flask girar more but we must also consider the strength of the Palermo. They were playing at home, they have great players,! we cann ot be satisfied with that.
For me it was a good start. I have played a good race. I followed the trend of the team at the end: well in the first part, eagerness for the last twenty minutes. I feel to 60-70 %. In Scotland I allenavo otherwise, here in Italy is different. "I had a problemino but gradually I'm rediscovering the right cond! ition."

Then but the thought runs immediately to the next Championship, Saint Nicholas against the Atalanta Race (a tender for the midfielder) dry not only of victories but also of points: "I wanted this game there at the moment." It is true, the ranking says that they are in difficulty, but propose a good kick. They had misfortune in these first days. They will be determintati result do but we also have the same objective. For ! me you w ill not be a race as all the others. I grew up in the Atalanta and Bergamo I consider it my second home but field no emotion.

Aquilani return sooner then expected

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is now claiming that Alberto Aquilani could return to training in 'two or three weeks'.

It was revealed when the summer signing joined the Reds that he was possibly eight weeks away from fitness following an ankle operation.

Benitez is now hopeful that the Italy international, a £20million replacement for Xabi Alonso, will soon join his new team-mates in training.

Benitez said: "Aquilani has improved, he has progressed in the ! way that we expected and now maybe in two or three weeks we will see him training.

"Then we will see how he progresses, but the last scan he had was very good."

Fergie reveals police involvement

The Red Devils got their new UEFA Champions League campaign off to a winning start as Paul Scholes headed a 77th minute winner for last season's losing finalists.

But Ferguson has confirmed that the match in Istanbul was overshadowed by the fact that police had to apprehend a fan with a laser who was targeting United players, especially Jonny Evans.

"It was in the first half, although thankfully the police did something about it," said the United manager.

"They managed to get the culprit, which is good because I noticed it particularly on Jonny Evans. It seemed to be on him all the time."

Ferguson was also alerted to a security problem behind his dug-out, although he was eager not to make an issue of that.

Angry reaction
"Someone mentioned it to me, but I never saw anything," he said.

"I do know the fans made the loudest noise I have ever heard. They never stopped the whole night."

Meanwhile, ! Ferguson insists that he always planned on substituting Wayne Rooney to save the England striker from fatigue.

Rooney reacted angrily when he was replaced by Michael Owen on 64 minutes, but his manager is adamant the tactical reshuffle was nothing to do with his performance

"It was always part of our thoughts to bring Wayne off," said Ferguson.

"He had been playing as the lone striker for an hour, which is why he was always going to come off.

"He is never pleased to come off. He has so much energy he wants to play all the time."

Liverpool dispute tap-up claims

Liverpool have played down suggestions they have been reported for an alleged illegal approach to a Crewe Alexandra teenager, BBC Sport understands.

Crewe director of footbal! l Dario Gradi claimed on Monday that the League Two outfit had reported an unnamed Premier League club for tapping up a player.

Reports on Tuesday suggested it was Liverpool, but the Reds say they are unaware of any complaint being made.

The player in question is believed to be 15-year-old Max Clayton.

Liverpool were linked with Clayton in February 2008 and were willing to pay a six-figure sum to take him to Anfield.

Crewe rejected Liverpool's initial approach, but Gradi says the teenager now wants to leave the League Two outfit.

He told the Daily Express: "Max has come in and told us that he wants to leave right now to join a big club.

"You worry financially for the clubs where the players are stolen from.

I'm delighted with what has happened with Chelsea... I would hope all of the big clubs are frightened to death
Dario Gradi

"What sort of compensation are we going to get f! or all the work that has gone into developing him? Any compensation is insignificant for the effort that gone in.

"It's simple, the big clubs are stealing other people's players."

Gradi made his claims in the wake of Fifa's decision to ban Chelsea from signing any players until January 2011 after they were found guilty of inducing 18-year-old French midfielder Gael Kakuta to break his contract with Lens in 2007.

The 68-year-old, who managed Crewe between 1983 and 2007, brought players such as David Platt, Danny Murphy, Seth Johnson, Robbie Savage and Dean Ashton through the ranks at the Alexandra Stadium during his time in charge.

Gradi has given his support to Fifa's decision to place a transfer embargo on Chelsea, who have already confirmed that they will launch the "strongest possible appeal" to the ruling.

Manchester United could also face an investigati! on after it emerged that another French club, Le Havre, are going to ask Fifa to look into Paul Pogba's move to Old Trafford in August.

"I'm delighted with what has happened with Chelsea," added Gradi. "I would hope all the big clubs are frightened to death. There is no excuse for breaking the rules.

"We lost a 12-year-old to Everton. He was our best 12-year-old. The lure is that the bigger clubs pay big expenses.

"This kid will be getting several hundred pounds a week in expenses. We pay expenses but nothing like that. It's more a case of giving out £20 if someone can pick a kid up en-route.

"At least Fifa have given the smaller clubs hope."
